Welcome, and thank you for visiting my website! My name is Ryan Sidey. I am a highly skilled individual in the financial sector, traditionally focused on portfolio analytics, relationship management, and sales. With 5+ years of industry experience, I have worked at some of the largest institutions in finance, including Bloomberg LP (a financial media conglomerate) and MSCI (formerly Morgan Stanley Capital International).

I have an in-depth understanding of how financial markets operate and the various roles required to run them. I have worked extensively across different departments and built a strong network throughout the industry and around the world, with contacts ranging from insurance in London to investment banking in New York.

I hold a BSc in Mathematics and an MSc in Finance from the University of Liverpool, where I achieved the highest grade among a cohort of 500+ students. I also hold several industry qualifications, including the Investment Management Certificate (IMC), Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC), and certification in Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) issues. I plan to continue expanding my expertise through ongoing professional development.

Throughout my career, I have helped countless clients, colleagues, friends, and family navigate the often confusing world of finance in the same way that has guided me in my own professional journey. Having worked with interns, graduates, and analysts in a professional capacity, I have decided to extend this support beyond the workplace to help others break down the barriers to success in finance. Why start a Career In Finance?

The figure above shows the average base compensation across different areas of finance in the UK. In 2023, first-year analysts at top banks earned up to £100,000 in their first year—yes, £100,000 right after university. This is more than 3x the median pay in the UK, with similar metrics observed in all global finance hubs. This is not an outlier; the average pay at the top banks exceeded £100,000.

The graph above does not include bonuses, which can be substantial. Analysts typically receive bonuses ranging from 20% to 50% of their base salary, adding £10k to £25k to their earnings. Associates see even larger bonuses, ranging from 50% to 100%, potentially doubling their base salary with an additional £45k to £90k. For VPs, bonuses are especially substantial, often ranging from 100% to 150% or more, meaning their total compensation can more than double their base salary, with bonuses reaching £140k to £210k or higher, depending on performance and firm success.

In short, landing a prestigious role in finance offers incredibly high pay and opens up amazing career opportunities.

However, there is a catch. As David Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs, noted: “For an entry-level job out of undergraduate university, Goldman Sachs received 300,000 applications and we hired a little over 2,500.” That’s super competitive—less than 1% of applicants are ultimately selected, with recruitment coming from a hugely diverse range of people and universities around the world.

What do the Numbers say?

Like many others, Money.

But working in Finance is rewarding far beyond the money. The analytical work is exciting, networking opportunities are unlimited, and relationship building is one of the strongest in the professional world. Personally, I’ve met some of my best friends through a common interest in Financial Markets.

Finance in a capitalist society has a significant impact on the world. It is often these professionals allocating capital towards serious world problems such as reducing global carbon emissions and developing new technologies through the money raised for research & development.
